Parcel Fraud: Staying Safe This Mother’s Day (and beyond)

Mother’s Day is just around the corner, a time for celebrating and showing appreciation to the special mothers in our lives. As many of us turn to online shopping to find the perfect gifts, there’s unfortunately a less heartwarming trend that also tends to spike during these periods: parcel fraud. While we eagerly await the arrival of our thoughtful presents, cybercriminals are equally busy trying to intercept our deliveries or steal our personal information through deceptive tactics.

Recent data underscores this growing threat. A report from NatWest highlighted a significant surge in delivery-related scams, positioning them as one of the fastest-growing forms of fraud. This isn’t surprising when you consider the sheer volume of parcels being shipped, coupled with our natural anticipation and trust in reputable delivery services. Fraudsters exploit this environment, hoping that a well-crafted message about a missed delivery or a request for a small “redelivery fee” will catch us off guard.

Understanding the Tactics: How Parcel Fraud Works

Parcel fraud typically involves fraudsters impersonating legitimate delivery companies via various communication channels. These can include:

  • Phishing emails: These emails often contain fake tracking links or notifications of a failed delivery, prompting you to click a link to reschedule or pay a small fee. These links usually lead to malicious websites designed to steal your login credentials or financial information.
  • SMS/Text messages (“Smishing”): Similar to phishing emails, these texts often claim there’s an issue with your delivery and ask you to click a link or call a number. The links can install malware on your phone or direct you to fraudulent websites.
  • Fake delivery notifications: You might receive a notification claiming a delivery attempt was made, even if you weren’t expecting one. These often include a card with a QR code or a link to “rearrange delivery,” which can lead to malicious sites.
  • Requests for unexpected fees: Be wary of messages asking for payment for customs charges, redelivery fees, or other unexpected costs before your parcel can be released. Legitimate delivery companies rarely, if ever, request such payments via text or email.

The emotional element surrounding gift-giving also plays a role. Our desire to ensure our Mother’s Day gifts arrive on time can make us more susceptible to these scams, as we might be quicker to click a link or provide information without fully scrutinising the message.

Key Findings from NatWest:

As mentioned earlier, NatWest’s recent report sheds light on the scale of this issue. Their findings indicate a significant increase in delivery scams, highlighting their effectiveness in deceiving individuals. It’s important to be aware that these scams are not isolated incidents but a growing trend that demands our attention and vigilance. The report likely details the percentage increase in these scams and potentially their ranking amongst other types of fraud, reinforcing the need for caution. Full article can be accessed here

Protecting Yourself: Staying One Step Ahead of the Fraudsters

Protecting yourself from parcel fraud requires a proactive and cautious approach. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind:

  • Be Sceptical of Unsolicited Communications: If you receive an unexpected email or text message about a delivery, especially if you weren’t expecting a package, treat it with suspicion. Don’t automatically click on links or provide personal information.
  • Verify Directly with the Courier: If you are unsure about a delivery notification, go directly to the official website or app of the courier company. Enter your tracking number (if you have one) to check the status of your delivery. Do not rely on links provided in suspicious messages.
  • Never Pay Unexpected Fees: Legitimate delivery companies have established procedures for handling any necessary payments. They will not typically request payment for customs or redelivery via text message or email. If you receive such a request, it’s a major red flag.
  • Secure Your Online Accounts: Use strong, unique passwords for your online shopping accounts and any accounts you have with delivery services. Enable two-factor authentication whenever possible for an extra layer of security.
  • Guard Your Personal Information: Be very cautious about sharing personal or financial information in response to unsolicited requests. Legitimate companies will never ask for sensitive details via text or email.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you encounter a message or website that you believe to be fraudulent, report it to the relevant delivery company and consider reporting it to Action Fraud or the National Cyber Security Centre (in the UK) or your local cybercrime reporting agency.
